Prima Dona
Dona Ganguly chooses to perform exclusively at singer Abhijeet’s Durga puja pandal
Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly, better known as wife of Saurav Ganguly was caught in a quandary recently. Apparently singer Abhijeet requested her to avoid performing at Rani Mukherji's Santa Cruz Durga puja.
Dona was in the city for a day, on an invitation from Abhijeet to perform at the Durgostav at Lokhandwala puja. Besides that, she was also keen to dance at another puja, for which she had been invited by Krishna Mukherji (Rani's mother).
Abhijeet expressed his disapproval when he came to know that Dona would go to the puja organised by Rani. "When Dona informed Abhijeet that she was also invited by Krishna Mukherji to perform at the Santa Cruz puja, he objected," says our source. Incidentally, Krishna wanted Dona to perform Odissi because Rani and Dona both are exponents of this dance form. Plus, the family shares a good rapport with Dona. "However, Abhijeet requested Dona to refrain from performing anywhere else. Not knowing much about the competition between the Abhijeet's puja and Rani's puja, Dona agreed to perform only for Abhijeet," says our source.
Dona says, "Yes, Krishnadi did ask me to perform at her puja pandal, but I had already committed to Abhijeet. I wanted to perform at Rani's puja, but Abhijeet made a request and I kept it. And performed only at his."
Sources say that Dona cancelled the performance that was scheduled to happen on Dassera at Santa Cruz. She called Krishna and apologised. "Allegedly, Abhijeet told Dona that Rani is not even present at the puja, so she shouldn't bother to perform there," says our source.
However, there is no bad blood between Dona and Rani's mother. Dona has promised to perform exclusively for their puja next year. "I didn't want to leave the city on a sour note, so I called Krishnadi and explained my situation to her. I know her very well, and she was extremely sweet about it. Dance, for me, is like worshipping God, so I would never hurt anyone through it."
