Amitabh Bachchan’s sudden illness has left Rani Mukerji without work for at least the next couple of months.
“I've only two films on hand. Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna and Ravi Chopra's Babul. And both have Amit uncle and me in the lead. So until he recovers completely I've no choice but to take it easy.”
Has this impromptu layoff disturbed her itinerary?
“Not at all. I now have a chance to do all the things that I've been putting off for so long.”
Making use of this free time, on Sunday she flagged off the Mumbai Marathon with Abhishek Bachchan.
“I have a Sunday off now and will use them to catch up on sleep and take care of several pending obligations. I can enjoy this luxury until Amit uncle is fit to shoot. I had earlier planned to take an off in April-May. In fact, my plans of a holiday have gone for a toss. Now, with this unexpected holiday, I'll take the time to do up my new house in Juhu, meet people, rehearse for my shows and listen to scripts.”
The year ahead looks promising for Rani.
“I'm waiting for my buddy Karan Johar's film to release. Then there'll be Babul. Both these films are equally challenging. This will be a quieter year on the career front as compared to 2005.”
Mukerji dismissed talk about differences with Preity Zinta when she talks about the great time they had on the sets of for Karan Johar's film.
“Preity is a lovely co-star. All our films together have worked. She jokes about putting me in her wedding picture to ensure her marriage will be a super-hit. People just want to create differences between us. Why should two actresses always have problems between them? I've never had any problems with any of my co-stars. When Ness Wadia came to New York he was shocked to hear the rumours about Preity and I not getting along. We shared a great comfort level. We aren't kids to be fighting. And with Karan Johar being the most affable director around, there can be no ill will on his sets.”
In the meanwhile Mukerji shows the least inclination to sign any new film.
“There're lots of roles. But nothing that excites me. They're all woman-oriented roles. I think Saathiya taught me to choose wisely. Now I put in my heart and soul into every role I do. Post-Black, people's expectations have increased to the extent that it is scary.”
At home, Rani is looking forward to being an aunt.
“My bhaiyya and bhabhi are expecting their first child. And that's the biggest excitement in my life right now. I'm really awaiting the arrival of the baby. Till I don't have my own, I'll pamper my brother's baby.”
So, is love around the corner for Mukerji?
“I just hope when it happens it doesn't hamper my work. Right now I'm too involved with my work – I don't know how I will be able to balance my personal and professional life. I'm very happy with life. Last year my dad was unwell. That bad phase has passed. This year, the entire family is looking forward to the first child in the family.”
