[glow=blue,2,300]Rani Mukerji[/glow] is known to be a stickler for punctuality. “Will you be able to come at around six?” she quips, adding with a grin, “I mean six in the morning.” The actress, on her part, is ready at the crack of dawn, coffee mug in hand.
“But, what are we going to talk about,” she asks. “I do not make for interesting interview material. I have nothing bad to say about anyone, I do not harbour grudges against my directors or producers, I am not dating anyone, I am not even planning to get married in the near future, I don't party till late night… if you have anything else apart from this to ask me, please go ahead.” And so the interview gets underway.
Nominations and Trophies
The actress who began her career with her father's Bengali film Biyer Phool (Wedding Flowers) in Kolkata has come a long way – today she has worked with the best directors, banners and actors. Her work has been aptly rewarded – this year she has been nominated in the Best Actress category for her performance in Black and Bunty Aur Babli. Do expectations intimidate her? “I have no expectations. It might sound clichéd but certain things in life are bound to be clichéd,” she says.
So, which award would make her happier, one for Bunty Aur Babli or for Black? “There is no doubt that Black holds a very special place in my heart and it's a role which established me as a seasoned actor,” she says. “When you have stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan in a film, and yet people take cognisance of your contribution, you feel good. As far as Bunty Aur Babli is concerned, it's a fun movie and Shaad Ali is an old friend. It is difficult to choose between the two. They should give an award for both films.”
Do these awards matter to her? “I am an actor, and I need an ego boost,” she replies. “I sneak into a theatre sometimes to see how audiences react to my acting. Awards confirm that you are on the right track.”
Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
Rani has just completed Karan Johar's Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna, and she can't stop raving. “I really want to give you details about the film, but Karan will kill me if I do so,” she laughs. “It was like an picnic for all of us. Shah Rukh, Abhishek, Amitji, Preity and Karan, we used to have a blast. Masti masti mein kaam kab khatam ho gaya pata hi nahin chala,” she adds. (We didn't even realise when the work got done amidst all the fun.)
Films Ahead
Rani has been signed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his next film, Sanwariya, with Salman Khan. “While he was making Black, I was like clay for him to mould. In fact, anyone who wins an award for Black, should hand over the credit to Sanjay. I play an important role in Sanwariya and I am looking forward to working with him again,” she says.
Sanjay and Rani share a very good rapport. “Sanjay loves cholar dal, begun bhaja, chingri maccher malai curry and luchi (Chhole, fried brinjal, prawn malai curry and puris). Every time he visits me, he relishes these delicacies. In return, Sanjay's mother makes dhokla for me,” she says.
Besides, once Rani returns from London she will join the unit of Babul. “I have seen Ravi Chopra's Baghbaan and I loved the film. I think Amitji and Hemaji look stunning in this film too. I will be working with John for the first time and I am sure it will be fun,” she says.
Going by her track record, most filmmakers repeat Rani in their films, barring Mani Ratnam who didn't repeat her in his next venture with Abhishek, preferred to sign Aishwarya Rai. “I respect Mani sir and I am sure that he will call me if he has a role for me. I have learnt a lot as an actor during Yuva. A director like Mani Ratnam does not just sign just an actor, but a character,” she explains.
Jodi No.1
Abhishek and Rani were voted Jodi No. 1 this year for Bunty Aur Babli. “Last year the title was bestowed on Amitji and Hemaji for Baghbaan. This year they gave us the award, and next year it will go to someone else. So there's nothing cooking here, and anyway I am a bad cook,” she laughs.
Preity and I
What about her cold vibes she shares with Preity Zinta? “I read an interview where Preity said that she wants to find the person who is spreading all these rumours and beat him up. I will also join Preity in the bashing-up session. She is a very good co-actor and we have no problems whatsoever,” says Rani.
Family Ties
Rani's brother Raja is making his directorial debut and will be working with Dia Mirza and Priyanshu Chatterjee. Isn't she interested in working with her brother? “Frankly, I don't have time for a new project,” she replies. “I will support Raja in his work. I have seen some of the episodes of Pratima for Sahara TV which he directed. He is dedicated and some day I will do a film with him for sure,” says Rani.
On the family front, she is soon to become an aunt, with her sister-in-law Jyoti expecting a baby. “I am so excited,” she says.
Dancing in Tandem
Rani is a classical dancer, but with her film assignments she hardly gets time for her passion. “I have learnt Odissi from Guru Ravindra Athiputi. Recently I did a fusion show on stage for an award ceremony too. But no one wants me to perform pure classical dance, so I hardly get a chance,” she says.
House that
It is a well-known fact that for the past couple of weeks Rani has been living in the Queen's Suite at J W Marriot because of the ongoing renovation in her apartment. “It felt different to live in a five-star suite in spite of having your own house in the same city. But, yesterday we all shifted back to our Versova apartment,” she says. The interiors of the house have been done by Twinkle Khanna. “I wanted Twinkle to do my house because she has an amazing sense of interiors. She understands me and my preferences.”
Hollywood Calling
Most actors are showing keen interest in Hollywood today, barring Rani. “I love watching them, but that is where my interest ends,” she says. “I am currently concentrating on my career in Bollywood and I can't multi-task. Mira Nair had approached me for Namesake, but I had already committed my dates to Karan Johar, so I had to forgo that opportunity.”
Love in the air?
A magazine recently wrote about Rani's torrid affair with director Aditya Chopra. “What rubbish,” she says. “Please give me a break. Aditya and his wife Payal are like family to me. I don't take on unnecessary stresses in life. I have my own ideology and I want to live my life on my own terms and conditions. I am a public figure and I need to interact with media, but after a certain point I draw a line, that's what experience, and age, has taught me.”
