Rani:"Yes I am Crazy In Love"
Riding the crest today with the stupendous magic of Chalte Chalte and Hum Tum, the critical accolades are now raining in from Yuva quarters. Yes, the crown of success does sit rather well on Rani!
She shares exclusively with CIINE BLIITZ, intimate secrets of the heart!
Food is MY FIRST LOVE! I am a complete foodie. I live to eat, not eat to live. Bengali, Punjabi, Chinese… any type of cuisine, as long as it tastes good. I am not very particular about calories! I eat whatever tastes good to me.
Don't you know that LOVE AND HATE COINCIDE? I don't hate because I feel it's too strong an emotion. You hate it when you don't get the things you love the most.
I am not messy at all…NEATNESS BECOMES ME. You will always find my room very neat. If I am hurrying for a party or something, my dressing table does get messy but once I get back, I set it in place. But you will never find my bed messy since I can't sleep on one!
To me the monsoon is good weather… Since I AM ROMANTIC by nature, the rain soothes my mood. I don't like to sit at home when it rains, I'd rathergo for long drives. I think the rainy season is the best time for garam chai and yummy stuff but no pakoras for me please! The first rains hold great memories for me…I remember those days in school, when my friends and I would get wet and take long walks on the beach.
Yes, I ENVY THEM! I am jealous of people who eat and don't put on weight (laughs). Those people really bug me because they don't have to control their diet. I guess that’s god's gift. It's quite an achievement.
I am NO COUCH POTATO even on days when I am not shooting. Instead I attend to my dogs, chat on the phone or maybe read a script. But I need to be doing something or the other.
Having this great house by the sea is MY SECRET DREAM! Something like the house I lived in during my childhood, before we shifted to this flat. There is nothing like an independent house on the beach with a swing attached to a tree. It's so peaceful…so serene.
I am INSECURE ABOUT TIME…losing time without doing anything worthwhile makes me very edgy. I feel I have so much to do…that sometimes it feels like time's running out.
What I need to do is STOP SCREAMING! My worst habit is that I shout a lot. I think I need to calm down a bit.
It would be foolish if I WASN"T INVOLVED IN POLITICS. With the way trends have changed in Mumbai, one must be aware of what's going on in the country. I the last elections, when the youth of the country was encouraged to vote I felt it was a good sign. They have to made aware of the country. I try to watch the news often and follow what's going on. It's a great step that actors are joining politics because they are generally nice people. The kind of sacrifices that actors make for their families is amazing. So if they join politics, sacrificing their time from acting, it must b because they are committed to the cause. Today we have Hema Malini, Dharmendraji, Jaya Prada, Govinda…Especially Govinda because he came up from a scratch and went on to become a superstar. Now he wants to do something for his constituency, which is fantastic. All this shows that people are working to make a difference. Politics also has an influx of young people like Milind Deora, Rahul Ghandi: men with fresh minds who are bringing a new perspective to politcs.
They are everything to me…MY FAMILY IS MY BACKBONE. One cannot survive without them. Your mom and dad love you so unconditionally. My low phase taught me a lot and made me stronger. The encouragement and strength of my family helped me through. No matter what, they kept me believing on myself. My mother especially never let me doubt myself even for a second. No matter what the situation was outside, at home everything remained the same. On the flip side, I wish they would sometimes treat me as special, like a star, instead of just another member of the house. It's irritating when you receive such special treatment outside but the moment you step into the house, you come crashing down to reality! Yet, that is what keeps me grounded and helps me retain my sanity. The first thing my father told me when I was joining the industry, was "In this line both failure and success are transitory; don't get affected by either. Most importantly, it does all end one day. If you remember that, it is not painful when it actually does." So at home, I am just Rani; the star remains at the doorstep!
I'm A WORKAHOLIC! My work is worship and my life's passion. My films have given me all that I have today-name, fame and adulation. I want to return the love of my audience by doing justice to my roles and my films. I am happiest when facing the camera. I am just as charged every day on the sets. In fact, each morning I tell myself, "Yes, let's do something great today." My aim is to justify my films and characters. It's a huge responsibility that my fans are not disappointed watching my films. Since I am working everyday, as a human being you do get tired of routine stuff. I haven't taken off from work in a long while. Yet everyday I tell myself I will give my best and not left myself down. The encouragement I get fro my directors is great. Right now, I am not thinking of the future. I would like to make a name for myself as an actress, get married and have children! That is my main aim but right now, I only think of work. I go crazy if I don't work. Even when I am holidaying I need to work and can't laze around.
I am A CHAMELEON! I think I am blessed. When I sign a film, read about the my character, and sit to decide on my costumes, I become the character. Around 50 percent of your work is done if you look the part. Otherwise, even a brilliant performance won't help. If I am playing the character of a bai with neat, starched clothes, I won't look like one right? At the same time, I am not into method acting. I don't believe in sweeping and cleaning the floor to look the part! There has to be a right balance. It helps to have a good director and a good camera man who shoots you well.
I don't lead a boring life-MY LIFE IS EXCITING! I go out to dinners and stuff with my family and we have a great time. I love spending time with them. Discos are not my scene, I don't like them. They are too noisy with too much smoke. I don't like dark places. But at close friend's private parties, I do let my hair down. It helps when people aren't scrutinizing me! I'm basically a home body, my home is my sanctuary. What's more, is that I am so busy that I don't get too much time these days. If I have to shoot the next day I like to relax and be refreshed. I have no social friends in the industry and my social life is more or less limited to me family. My mom, dad, brother and sister-in-law begin and end my social circle.
The MEN I LOVE are all my co-stars but I am apart of their work life and not their personal life. I love all my industry friends. When we are shooting together we laugh, joke and have a ball. But the moment pack up is announced, I head straight for home. Since I am never around after work hours, I don't even realize if there is any problem. I have great respect for Aamir and we are friends. I am very fond of shahrukh and share a special bond with him. I am extremely fond of Salman and his family. During Hello Brother, I got close to all of them. They are so warm and special. I also love Bobby, Abhishek…all my co-stars! So why should my relationships with them, which is individual to each, change or suffer?
Yes, I suffer FRIENDSHIP BANES…These are such difficult relationships to sustain. It is a serious thing. You Know your friends through a lot of trial and tribulation. If you have great friends, you are the luckiest person on earth. They are not your relatives; they don't expect anything from you and if they still want to be with you it feels great. You feel it's a privilege to have good friends.
WOMAN POWER has always existed. Yes things have changed a bit considering a lot more women are going to work. But for me, this is not a new concept. We have grown up seeing our moms being the super power. Actually women are by nature slightly more homely than men. No matter how much a woman stays outside for work, it's her home that satisfies her the most.
I never know HOW MUCH MONEY I carry with me. When I leave home I make sure to carry my mobile phone, other wise my communication will go for a toss! I don't bother about the content of my wallet. If I know I have to buy something, I ask my dad for money. Otherwise, honestly, I never bother with how much money I carry in my bag. I prefer to use cash to credit cards but when I go aboard I get a little credit card-ish!
PUBLIC TRANSPORT? It's been so long since I traveled by it. Let me think…oh yes, the last time I used it was when I was in Chandigarh. It was pouring heavily and the airport was flooded, so we were taking form the landing area to the car park area by bus. I was traveling with the public after a long time and it felt good. I realized that most people were totally hassled and angry but I was very chilled out. I just felt happy to be among people again.
I have never bunked shooting. SORRY, NO BUNKING WORK! You can't take off shooting because that involves a lot of money among other things.
I rarely have BAD HAIR DAYS perhaps because I take care of my hair. I like to oil it regularly, what with all the wear and tear out hair goes through during shooting!
It's A SACRED RITUAL! I never leave home without praying to god every morning.
Yes I pregnant dog TOO! But I only indulge in healthy gossip and pregnant doging when I am with good friends. I can't really elaborate on this!
ACTING TO ME is like my existence. It's my work, my life, my existence. Success is apart of my life that I cannot do without. But FAME IS HUMBLING…Fact is, it is something given by people and is snatched away by the same people.
Today there are so many awards and their importance had diminished. You do feel good when you get an award, it's like a gift. But the BEST AWARD for me in terms of status WOULD BE AN OSCAR. In terms of non-material awards, it would be the love and affection from my fans.
Yes, the STAGE FRIGHT CONTINUES! This doesn't happen only when you are performing, it happens even when you are addressing an audience. It happens most to me on my classical dance shows. It is a lonely moment when you realize you are all alone on a stage and 20,000 or 40,000 people are staring at you, observing your every movement. It makes you very conscious.
