"Govinda is just a good friend!" - Rani catching up with cliches!
There's something about Rani Mukherjee that always makes her rise above a movie, no matter how dull the response to it is. Her Badal was a horror, Hello Brother was a washout and her performance in Hey Ram was not as sensational as she thought it would be. Inspite of it all, we still love this confident belle who first stole our hearts with Ghulam and then Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Here, the born charmer talks of what she's up to nowadays, her much-discussed relationship with Chi-chi and lots more.
This year, none of your films clicked. Can you tell us why?
For all the films I did this year, I got a lot of appreciation. In fact, it's been like that for all my films. Do you know how much I was appreciated for Hey Ram? Badal was also a successful film … and didn't you find my work good in Hello brother? I feel that what's important is not how much you eat but what you eat. As for me, I am a lucky heroine. I've got good films and am still getting good films - I really get what I wish for.
Tell us about Hadh Kar Di Aapne, your first film with Govinda.
We are doing three films together - Hadh Kar Di Aapne, Chalo Ishq Ladaye and Pyar Deewana Hota Hai. Hadh Kardi is a typical Govinda film. We had a ball doing the film. In the movie, Govinda (who plays a wannabe detective) and I meet in Europe and fall in love. Then due to some complications, we separate. The film is about how despite all odds we get back together in the end. Though the story sounds just okay, it has been presented very well and shot in some lavish locations.
Wasn't Mahima Chaudhary signed up for Hadh Kar Di Aapne?
When I first met director Manoj Agarwal, he narrated the story to me. I liked the role and so I signed the film. It was only later that I came to know that Mahima had already been signed for the film. But the shooting had not started.
How was it like working with Manoj?
Manojji is a good director. We toured many places for 40 days and I found he's a nice person to work with. And I am very satisfied with his work. I might work with him on another movie.
What do you think of Govinda, the actor?
He is a complete actor. He is the only actor who can make you cry and make you laugh. Very few people have this gift. I feel it's God's gift to him.
Ever since you've started doing films with Govinda, there have been many rumours about the two of you...
The press has always assumed that any heroine who works with Govinda in three or four films is having an affair with him. I am not the first one to be linked with him. Neelam, Farah, Karisma, Raveena, Preity…and I don't know how many more have been linked with him. I know just one thing, that's it's difficult to find a nice friend, a humdard like Govinda. He's also a good human being and works 18 hours a day. It's great working with Chi Chi. In fact, we are both so down-to-earth that I enjoy working with him. For that matter, I loved working with Salman in Hello Brother and also with Bobby in Badal. About rumours, you've got to love films to be able to take the pressure it brings. Even the amount of hard work that goes into every scene could put you off very quickly unless you have this passion. But once you know that films are in your blood, you can tackle anything.
Isn't it true that Sunita has warned Govinda against working with you and that is why Vikram Bhatt's Tumhare Liye has been shelved?
What nonsense! Just a few days back I had gone for Govinda's son's birthday party where Sunita Govinda and I danced together. Govinda loves his wife immensely. Tumhare Liye was shelved because Govinda and I don't have combination dates required for the film. We have three films on the floor and none of them have been completed because of our date hassles. So naturally, we thought it's better we complete the assignments on hand before starting a new project. It wouldn't be fair to Vikram if we started the film and then didn't give him the dates. I'm really fed up of being asked about Chi Chi. Things could have become quite awkward between us. But mercifully, since there's nothing on between us, we behave with each other just as we've always done.
Finally, has stardom brought about a big change in your life and personality?
Yes, it has but it's a change I'm finding difficult to deal with coz I've always been very carefree, happy to be by myself. I never really had any secret dreams or ambitions. But now it's different and I guess I have to accept it.
