Rani Mukerji tells Viral Bhayani all about her relationship with Abhishek Bachchan, amongst her thoughts on playing a prostitute in The Rising, and Bunty Aur Babli being a remake of Bonnie and Clyde.
After Yuva, Veer-Zaara and Black, Rani Mukerji is being hailed as the queen of Bollywood. She has a blitz in store: After Bunty Aur Babli, there’s Paheli and Mangal Panday. Rani has a lot to be happy about: plaudits galore for her sublime performance in Black and a dinner with President Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani President, General Musharraf. Rani reveals all in an exclusive interview to us conducted at 'King Khan' Shah Rukh’s personal office!
Excerpts from the Interview:
You have undergone a complete makeover. Do you think that talent alone is not enough to make a good actor?
One needs to have a mixture of everything and this is the time of good packaging. We are subjected to people’s choice and we are constantly living on the edge. Curiosity remains only till the audience is excited about you and hence one needs to be well presented.
What’s it like being on top of the charts?
I wake up worried every morning, as when you do a good job people want you to continue with it. Films are my life. I don’t think I will ever quit or retire. Even after my marriage and kids, I will still be part of the film industry.
Any regrets about certain movies which affected your career graph?
Everything in life is a learning experience. I do not regret having taken up any film till date. All my films have taught me something or the other. When I did Hey Ram, I received a lot of flak for it but then Mani Ratnam who happened to watch the film called me up to offer me Yuva, which in turn proved to be a turning point in my career.
What attracted you towards Paheli?
Firstly that it’s a love story between a ghost and a simple, Rajasthani married lady. It is the dilemma of the girl who has to choose between the ghost’s eternal love and her husband’s insensitive monotone.
Do you agree with the sexual independence depicted in Paheli?
Today, the sexual independence that we are talking exists everywhere, but it is just that we are too shy it to project to the world.
But you, as an individual watching the film might relate to it, women especially will relate to this film, as every lady would like her man to give her his time.
The best part about Paheli is that it is a folk tale being used to educate women about their rights.
So who did you personally enjoy more- the SRK ghost character or the SRK husband character?
SRK, the ghost character, as he is more fun. Personally, I’m very scared of ghosts and whenever I watch horror movies, I end up sleeping in my parents’ room.
It is said that Bunty Aur Babli film is a remake of Bonnie and Clyde?
It is not a remake. In fact, Bunty Aur Babli is far more interesting than Bonnie and Clyde.
Your relationship with Abhishek is much in discussion these days.
The thing about me and Abhishek is that we are such close pals that our chemistry works on the big screen. That’s why after Bunty Aur Babli, Karan Johar has signed us both in a film together.
When real life romance actors work together, there is always discomfort as a lot of personal things crop up. But two friends can work wonders when acting, like in the case of Shah Rukh and Kajol.
But it’s a good thing that people have linked us together as that will benefit the films promotion. As far as Abhishek goes, I’m not dating him. I have no time for dates. Personally I hope Abhishek gets a very nice girl, as he is a good friend of mine and I can only hope the best for him.
It is said that you were the first choice of Jaya Bachchan as the girl for Abhishek...
There is nothing like that, at least she never told me! Abhishek is actually younger to me in the industry, so it’s easy for me to boss him around.
Some magazines spell your second name as ‘Mukerji’ and not ‘Mukherjee.’ Is it because of numerological reasons?
Well I have not changed my surname for numerological reasons. Just that ‘Mukerji’ is the name on my passport and my birth certificate.
Is it true that you are playing the role of a prostitute for the first time in your career in The Rising?
Yes. I play a prostitute called ‘Heera’ who belongs to the 18th century when only the Whites used to frequent the brothels for their carnal pleasure.
Your entire body language has got to be changed when you set out to portray a prostitute. Prostitutes aren’t at all self conscious about their body because they treat it as a commodity on sale.
My character is a little raunchy in The Rising but I enjoyed playing the role to the hilt. It was wonderful working with Aamir after a long time.
Any regrets that your film Black will not be noticed in the West as it was not accepted as an entry in both Cannes and Oscars?
I’m sure it will find some acceptance.
But since it is inspired from another Hollywood film and that’s why it is not India’s entry?
Oh that is really sad. I wasn’t aware of this.
