Rumours of Rani Mukherji’s wedding have been making more news than her movies of late. The actress got candid about the many reports of her marriage in an exclusive interview with CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor, Rajeev Masand.
Rajeev Masand: Let us start with the awkward questions first. In the last one year the only thing that everyone has been talking about is your impending marriage. Why do you think these rumours gathered so much steam in the last one year?
Rani Mukherji: You will have to ask your colleagues that because they were the ones who started it. But it is quite scary if I think of it right now. It was funny in the beginning when they played it on all the channels but then it got weird because they kept saying that I was engaged.
Ironically, I was shooting in Yashraj Studios that day for Laga Chunari Mein Daag. Konkona is getting married in the last reel of the film and we were all doing the Kachchi kaliyan song and Konkona comes in to my room and says 'what the hell is happening?' And I just said 'I have no clue'. We had been shooting from morning to night. So it was quite irresponsible on the media's part to say something without any facts to back it up.
Rajeev Masand: But everyone is sort of obsessed to get you married.
Rani Mukherji: It is strange. Though it is great being married but it is not that great when you are not married and are not intending to get married either. Then the news can be quite harmful. So I found it hilarious in the beginning but then I made a trip to London and people actually came up to me to congratulate me. That is when I realised that people begin to believe in rumours especially those who live abroad because they only have the press to give them news.
Rajeev Masand: Did these rumours hurt your family?
Rani Mukherji: Of course it did. My parents were quite shocked. My relatives started calling them to find out if the rumours were true. For me it was very strange because I was not even in a relationship, leave aside getting engaged or getting married after that. So my parents just couldn't understand why someone would start this malicious rumour.
Rajeev Masand: Did this hurt you professionally? Did you think that producers became wary of coming to you because they felt that maybe you will just get up and go away?
Rani Mukherji: See I don't know about the people who haven't worked with me. Probably they felt the way you mentioned right now. It's difficult to judge because it is very difficult to differentiate between news and rumours in the papers. But with those I usually work, it was no big deal. They really did not bother about it. They knew the facts because they were close to me.
Rajeev Masand: On a different note, were you shocked when you did not get the National Award for Black? That year the award went to Sarika for Parzania.
Rani Mukherji: I wouldn't say shocked but I did feel bad. Am not superhuman that I would say such things don't matter. But more than me my fans and my well-wishers were disappointed. And my family too but I think it is all part of the game.
